4th Year Arts Education Student

It’s safe to say that this man started some fun waves of change and in only one night was responsible for starting a ripple of 10 incidents of paying-it-forward!  I think the ultimate moment though was one night when he had come to the Freehouse to cheer himself up after a particularly bad day and  two of our servers (who, because of the rules, will remain nameless) paid-it-forward to him – something that I don’t think he’d ever expected to happen, needless to say he left with a smile on his face.  I’m sad to say that we haven’t seen Pay-it-Forward Man for several months - he stopped in one night and told us that he’d been working in Regina for a number of years but his contract was up and he was moving on but that he’d thoroughly enjoyed his time here and if he was ever through again he’d stop by.  All of us here at the Freehouse would like to give kudos to you sir, and if you ever read this then we’d also like to thank you for your patronage and for allowing us to witness firsthand the overwhelming kindness that people have the capacity for.

Bourbon’s back! For a long time bourbon was a dependable drink and an old standby that was reliable in a rough-around-the-edges sort of way but today, bourbon’s reputation has been shaken up considerably.  Limited edition runs of bourbon are taking the market by storm and classic bourbon cocktails are getting a modern twist – bourbon drinkers rejoice and get excited about this classic sweet corn whiskey again!

Now some of you may have been bourbon lovers for years while others may have always been curious but perhaps a bit intimidated by this American whiskey.  In either case, we’ve got an exciting event that will appeal to both ends of the spectrum and everything in between. On Thursday, October 25th from 3-5pm the Jim Beam Ambassador for western Canada will be at the Freehouse along with a variety of Jim Beam bourbons on which he’ll educate and explain the finer points of this sweet grain alcohol. Not only will there be bourbon, but Chef LaValley has pulled together a fantastic menu featuring Red Stag Glazed House-Made Beef Jerky, Coca Cola Pork Back Ribs, Whiskey Cheddar, and Chili Glazed Pecans, to name a few items and the best part is it’s all compliments of Jim Beam.

The LaValley’s and their two daughters

A split second can alter lives and send out ripples which can become great waves of change.  Sasha LaVelley can attest to this, the sister of Chef LaValley was nearly taken by a stroke mere days before her wedding, thankfully the quick actions of her daugter Kalli saved her life and Sasha was able to exchange ‘I dos’ on September 1st.  Not only were the LaValley’s able to celebrate life and the union of families, but as a result of this near-tragedy, they have begun a movement of change that will benefit the Heart and Stroke Foundation, stroke victims and their families, as well as children with cancer.

On October 4th the Freehouse will be the venue for Kalli’s Global Dinner in partnership with Philippe Dandurand Wines.  Tickets will be $50 per person (available at the Freehouse) and will include a five-course dinner with beverage pairings for each course (so in order to purchase tickets you must be 19 years of age or older).  All of the proceeds from this Global Dinner will be donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.  For more information see the attached poster here.

All American Cheeseburger Pizza

Pizza, that’s right, a beautiful fusion of crispy, golden, thin crust topped with primo fresh ingredients that we slow roast, sear, and smoke in house then we top it off with gooey, melty, salty cheese… Now that’s a pie done right!  Now, it is important to note that we sympathize with those of you who can’t do wheat and those of you who are vegan, it would seem as though pizza hasn’t got anything to offer you, but that’s where you’re wrong.  We do our best to accommodate everybody and, though we can’t necessarily track down

pepperoni for a pie, we can make them with a gluten-free crust and can even make ‘em without cheese, meat, and pesto – thus leaving them vegan-friendly.  If you’ve had an aversion to pizza in the past for either of these two very legitimate reasons then it’s time to rejoice and fall in love with this tantalizing Italian comfort food all over again, we’ll gladly reintroduce you any time you like.

Here’s the part where we’d like to take a second to shout out to other places  in Regina that we love to grab a pie from including the Copper Kettle for its sheer diversity of tasty pies as well as Sparky’s if you like a big fat slice!
